Mappa Animalia

MAPPA ANIMALIA is a series of unique, imaginative maps that reimagines the world through the lens of the animal kingdom. Instead of traditional countries, states, and regions, these maps are divided into families, subfamilies, tribes and genera, with cities named after the species within each genus. This allows you to explore the family trees of different animals the same way you would explore a traditional map.

”The MAPPA ANIMALIA series is not based on actual geographic data but rather on various phylogenetic trees that show the relationships between species, sometimes also referred to as evolutionary family trees. These trees have then been converted into the colorful format of cartography, in an attempt to symbolize the essential yet delicate bond between animals and their natural habitats. By doing this, I hope to remind people that animals are as important to nature, as nature is to us.” - Jeppe Ringsted
