Mytilidae - Land of Mussels

MYTILIDAE is the only extant family of ”true mussels”, consisting of small to large bivalve molluscs found primarily in colder seas and brackish water. Instead of countries, states and regions, LAND OF MUSSELS is divided into the subfamilies and genera of mytilidae with ”cities” bearing the names of the species within each genus. This allows you to explore the animal kingdom just like you would explore a traditional map. This particular map was created in the image of the BLUE MUSSEL, meaning the shape of this land was dictated by this animals unique physical features - all drawn from scratch.

”The MAPPA ANIMALIA series is not based on actual geographic data but rather on various phylogenetic trees that show the relationships between species, sometimes also refered to as evolutionary family trees. These trees have then been converted into the colorful format of cartography, in an attempt to symbolize the essential yet delicate bond between animals and their natural habitats.
