URSIDAE is the family all bear species belong to including the giant panda, the grizzly bear and the polar bear. Instead of countries, states and regions, LAND OF BEARS is divided into subfamilies, tribes and genera with cities bearing the names of the species within each genus. This allows you to explore the animal kingdom just like you would explore a traditional map. This particular map was created in the image of the GIANT PANDA, meaning the shape of this land was dictated by this animals unique physical features - all drawn from scratch.
”The MAPPA ANIMALIA series is not based on actual geographic data but rather on various phylogenetic trees that show the relationships between species, sometimes also refered to as evolutionary family trees. These trees have then been converted into the colorful format of cartography, in an attempt to symbolize the essential yet delicate bond between animals and their natural habitats. By doing this, I hope to remind people that animals are as important to nature, as nature is to us.” - Jeppe Ringsted
When purchasing a Mappa Animalia print you will also have a PDF-file sent to your email that contains an in-depth description on how to navigate the illustration you just bought. It also includes an alphabetical species index to help you pinpoint exactly where each animal is found on the map, among other things.
